How I Transformed My Company
How I Transformed HR at My Company
I. Introduction
In my journey through the dynamic realm of HR, I encountered challenges that tested my problem-solving skills and led to transformative solutions. This blog shares my experiences in an Omani company, highlighting two critical problems we faced and the innovative solutions I spearheaded to revolutionise HR. It's a testament to the power of proactive problem-solving and the potential for tailored solutions to bring about substantial change.
II. Problems Faced
Problem 1: Attendance Tracking
My first obstacle was the common issue of attendance tracking. The company had a biometrics system, but it was rarely used, resulting in inaccurate attendance records and the disbursement of full salaries regardless of actual attendance. This had significant financial implications and a notable lack of accountability.
Problem 2: Limited HR Functionality
The second challenge was the glaring absence of an effective HR department, especially within the production division. The company's initial emphasis on technical and production aspects had left HR in a state of disarray. It was clear that we needed a cohesive HR system that could align with the Company's needs.
III. Solutions Implemented
Solution to Problem 1: Attendance Tracking
To tackle the attendance issue, I adopted a hands-on approach, beginning with interviews of stakeholders. Gathering feedback from HODs and the HR team, we used their insights to formulate proposed changes. This collaborative effort informed the design of a new attendance system, complete with formats, policies, and procedures. Through transparent communication, we encouraged employees to embrace the system, resulting in improved attendance tracking and greater accountability.
Solution to Problem 2: HR Functionality Enhancement
Addressing the limited HR functionality required a holistic strategy. We bolstered the HR team by hiring qualified professionals from India. Armed with a clear understanding of our HR gaps, we set out to redesign HR functions, including recruitment, performance management, and more. The expertise of Hay Group was enlisted to overhaul the salary and performance systems. Customization was key as we tailored solutions to meet the company's unique needs, earning the trust of our employees.
IV. The Results and Outcomes
The solutions we implemented produced remarkable results. Employee engagement and commitment increased, cultivating a more productive work culture. A revamped bonus system meant that employees received 7 to 10 monthly salaries as their annual performance bonus, a significant improvement. Company performance surged by an impressive 43% over three years, a statistic that was acknowledged in board meetings. Our journey also earned us recognition in the boardroom, where I frequently presented our HR initiatives. The HR team became the go-to resource for technical teams seeking HR support, underscoring the tangible impact of our transformation.
V. Lessons we Learned
Reflecting on this journey, I've come to appreciate the power of experiential learning and the significance of sincerity and concern in implementing changes. This experience has reaffirmed the value of proactive problem-solving and the importance of crafting tailored solutions to meet specific needs. It's a lesson in the fact that genuine transformation requires dedication, listening to stakeholders, and building an HR system that resonates with everyone.
VI. Conclusion
My journey in transforming HR in the Sultanate of Oman has been an extraordinary voyage in problem-solving and solutions. Identifying HR issues, devising innovative fixes, and witnessing the profound transformation of an organisation has been an incredibly fulfilling experience. My hope is that my story inspires others to approach problem-solving proactively, embrace experiential learning, and craft solutions that are finely tuned to their unique circumstances.
